Summary

The East Africa Journal of Human Rights and Democracy is founded on the need to establish and build a new vision of human development for East Africa through a broad program of the promotion and consolidation of human rights and democratic values.

This is premised on the understanding that a strong democratic culture and human rights regime will constitute the most durable foundation of advancing sound social, economic and political progress in the region. This journal will endeavor to engage all actors in governance and development in the local (grassroots), national and regional dialogue on a range of issues relating to the securing of a bright future for development in East Africa. The progress towards the East African Community and the promulgation of Poverty reduction strategies by the three east African countries which give foremost recognition to the promotion of human rights and good governance constitute a good basis for this region-wide publication with the objectives and scope as outlined in this inception paper.

Overiding Objectives

The journal will broadly address the following two overriding objectives:

  1. To facilitate the generation, dissemination and sharing of knowledge and information on human rights, good governance and democracy and other civic virtues in East Africa; and
  2. To support efforts and activities aimed at conflict management and resolution and peace building processes as the primary basis for meaningful social, economic and political developments in East Africa.

Specific Objectives

Specifically the publication and its activities will attempt to meet the following and other objectives:

  1. Facilitate the advancement and consolidation of the values of democratic governance, inculcation of civic virtues and human rights;
  2. Enhance public awareness on the relationship between the promotion of human rights and democratic values and social economic and political development;
  3. Foster the integration of human rights issues in the advancement of the positions and interest of special groups like women, children, environment and refugees;
  4. Assist in development of a model for integrating human rights and democracy concerns into the education systems in East Africa;
  5. Highlight, support and replicate successful and effective models and strategies for human for rights education in East Africa;
  6. Examine the scholarly, policy and theoretical trends and advances in the fields of human rights and democracy and how they relate to the visions and actions for equitable development, social justice, and peace and conflict management;
  7. Analyze and report on the 'state of the art' in the efforts by various actors in these fields. Establish a resource for continuous reflection, analysis and creation and dissemination of knowledge and information on human rights and democracy in the region through region-wide networks and collaborative programs;
  8. Facilitate in the interpretation and monitor adherence to regional and international human rights instruments and democratic standards Conduct activities aimed at conflict management and social economic development as a basis for peace building and democracy ; and
  9. Promote and advance rights-issue related to aspects of inter-generational equity and justice and especially in regard to the environment and natural resources management.
